Seal of the 1305 Stannary Charter Seal of the 1305 Stannary Charter
The Stannary Charter of 1305, Granted by Edward 1 to the Tinners of Cornwall on 10th April 1305, the Charter was probably the earliest comprehensive document granting rights and privileges to Tinners. The Latin inscription around the central design translates:

"The Seal of the Community of Cornish Tinners"

The central design features two Tinners, one at work with a pick and the other with a shovel. Between them is a lions head with water issuing from the mouth, representing the streams which most tin came from at that time. On the reverse is an extract from the Charter which actually granted Tinners the right to dig and search for tin anywhere that tin could be found. It reads:

"To mine for tin and dig turves for smelting tin everywhere in our lands, moors and wastes and in those of all other persons whatsoever in the said county . "As has formerly been done".

Authorisation of the Charter to the Tinners of Cornwall. Edward 1, 10 April 1305.

The extract certainly conveys the eminent and ancient status of Cornish Tin.

The Seal, originally in lead, has been cast in South Crofty Tin for the collection. The tin ore has been processed, smelted and cast by the South Crofty Collection in Cornwall.
A more detailed desciption and authentication is with the Coin in a Black suedette pouch.

Dolcoath Penny Dolcoath Penny
Probably the best known of all the Cornish tokens, the Dolcoath Penny was issued during the third period of token production between 1811 and 1812. The obverse of the coin carries the Arms and Union Supporters of Lord De Dunstanville. Sir Francis Bassett, Squire of Tehidy, had been promoted to a Colonel in 1797 and advanced to the peerage as Lord De Dunstanville. On the reverse are the words:

"Cornish Penny"

Between two lines in the centre, encircled by the words:

"payable in cash notes at Dolcoath Mine".

Prior to 1810, as on previous occasions, the high price of metals had again resulted in the melting down of tokens, creating yet another shortage of low denomination coin. The price of copper slumped in 1810 and this new series of coins appeared shortly after.

The Dolcoath Penny, along with the other Cornish pennies of the period was designed and produced by Thomas Halliday of Birmingham.
The Dolcoath Penny has been die struck in Cornish tin salvaged from the wreck of the "SS Liverpool" and features a lightly patinated finish.

A more detailed desciption and authentication is with the Coin in a Black suedette pouch.

Druids Head Half Penny Druids Head Half Penny
Issued in 1791, the Druids Head Half Penny was one of a number of late 18th Century copper half pennies produced during the second period of token production in Britain.

This particular token was the first of a series and is generally considered the most attractive. It features a Druid's Head on the obverse and the County Arms on the reverse, encircled by the words:

"Cornish Copper Half An Ounce 1791"

The replica in the collection has been die struck in Cornish copper. This copper was salvaged from the wreck of the East India Company vessel "Carnbrea Castle", which sank off the Isle of Wight in 1829.

A detailed description and authentication comes with the Coin in a black Suedette pouch

Scorrier Penny Scorrier Penny
Issued by John Williams of Scorrier House, owner of the highly successful Gwennap Mines. In 1811, the Scorrier Penny reproduced for the collection, is one of several carrying variations of the same basic design. Some of these are assumed to be the counterfeit versions which undermined confidence in the genuine token issues among the working class. Each version included minor differences to either the Engine House featuring an early pumping engine beam with a horse powered whim (winding machine) to its right on the obverse, or the fish, tin and copper traditional Cornish toast on the reverse.

The Scorrier and Dolcoath pennies were withdrawn within weeks of each other when efforts to bolster confidence in them finally failed. The action no doubt helped to maintain the good name of the mine owners and avoid unrest amongst miners.
The Scorrier Penny in the collection is die struck in Cornish tin recovered in 1995 from the wreck of the "SS Cheerful" after 100 years on the sea bed off the Cornish coast.

South Crofty 1998 South Crofty 1998
The fifth coin in the collection depicts on its' face the classic images of the modern South Crofty Mine. Above ground "or grass" to use the traditional mining terminology, the mine is dominated by the steel headframe standing astride New Cooks, Kitchen Shaft (Cooks Shaft), the Mine's main shaft used during operations.

The headframe, with its' distinctive "gallows top", served two winders, one operating "manriding" cages and the other "ore hoisting" skips. Alongside, a miner using a modern "air leg" drill, starts another hole deep in the granite bedrock, almost 3,000 feet below the surface.

On the reverse, the four shafts in use at South Crofty can be seen descending from the surface to the extensive network of drives, declines and raises which honeycomb the depths of the mine, covering an area two and a half miles long and half a mile wide. The perspective feature is looking north east with Roskear shaft on the left, New Cooks Kitchen Shaft on the extreme right, with Robinsons and Taylors shafts to its left and progressively more distant.

The words originate from graffiti painted on the wall at the entrance to the mine during the period of the mine's closure. The full piece reads:

"Cornish lads are fishermen and Cornish lads are miners too, but when the fish and tin are gone what are Cornish boys to do?"

The coin is cast in South Crofty tin which was mined during the last weeks of the mine's operation in 1998 and smelted recently for the collection. It has a natural polished finish.
