Issued in 1791, the Druids Head Half Penny was one of a number of late 18th Century copper half pennies produced during the second period of token production in Britain. This particular token was the first of a series and is generally considered the most attractive. It features a Druid's Head on the obverse and the County Arms on the reverse, encircled by the words: "Cornish Copper Half An Ounce 1791" The replica in the collection has been die struck in Cornish copper. This copper was salvaged from the wreck of the East India Company vessel "Carnbrea Castle", which sank off the Isle of Wight in 1829. A more detailed description and authentication comes with the Coin in a black Suedette pouch. |
